    Good food.
    Nice people.
    Hometown atmosphere.
A lot of food for the price.
On the corner. Look it or you might miss it.

Cal's Country Kitchen was exactly the kind of food I was looking for.... homemade style food that you will immediately remember your grandmother making from your childhood. I really wanted to give this place 5 stars just walking in. While the food choices were what I was looking for, the execution was lacking.

Our family was really excited to try this place. We love classic home style food, but on our visit we felt the quality of the experience was probably two star at best. Let me explain ....

Three stars to me is what I give places that are "average". Had this place executed on even an average quality food experience they would have earned 4 if not 5 stars for the friendliness of the staff and the "neighborhood" mom and pop experience.

Regardless of the rating, I actually liked this place. The staff was incredibly welcoming and friendly and the restaurant reminded me of a Mom and Pop place in Jackson Mississippi my dad used to take me. Down home people making honest down home food.

We stopped in for lunch and had planned to dine in, but there were no clean tables to sit at. There were only two other people dining in, but all available tables still had leftover plates of food on them. The line was long and they seemed too understaffed to run the dining area so we decided to get our food to go.

The food is where they lost us.... the cornbread pancakes we got were rubbery (nearly inedible) the chicken and dressing was soggy, the greens were flavorless and the only thing "bbq" about the barbecue chicken was the sauce it was baked in. The chicken reminded me of something you would get at a school cafeteria.

Perhaps it was so disappointing mostly because our hopes were so high.

We will certainly be back to see if we just caught them at a bad time. Maybe we were late in the service so the food wasn't as fresh as it could have been.... perhaps the dining room was full and emptied just prior to our arrival.... no matter what I will make up some excuse in my head to give me a reason to try them again. I liked the staff so much and the food they serve seems like it was ripped from my grandmothers own cookbook.

Thank you for the friendly welcoming service Cal's staff !! I will be back...., if anything so I can give myself some reason to give you the rating I am sure you deserve.

Down home cooking at its best! My family and I came from California to eat lunch here. we all had a little bit of this and that so we sampled an array of things they had to choose from, their chicken dressing tasted just like my mothers!. Yams are a must have! The meatloaf A1. The staff were all so friendly and inviting they showed us true southern hospitality. The prices are reasonable. They have so many good choice you can go wrong we had two vegetarians with us and they were very pleased with their selections. Desserts are plentiful and great priced.

You will not leave here hungry. I had the fried chicken, collard greens, and mac and cheese. Homemade, southern food just like I like it. Friendly staff. It feels like my Sunday dinners spent with family in McEwen, TN.

How have I lived in Madison for 5 years and just now tried this place?? Every bite of everything I had was out of this world good: chicken and dressing, mac and cheese, turnip greens, cornbread, and lemon chess pie. It was fresh and clearly homemade. Every. Bite. Outstanding. I plan on going back as much as possible.
